FMSH, Journal n°3

Between heritage and innovation: research in action with the Foundation
Dégradé bleu

This third issue of the Journal de la FMSH gives us an opportunity to share the new impulse given to the FMSH's activities. Whilst remaining faithful to its core missions—the dissemination of knowledge and international mobility—which we are proud to serve on behalf of the scientific community, the year 2025 is the start of a new cycle.

Our work will now be structured around major programs, which will provide new synergy for all our initiatives: research funding, dialogue with society, partnerships and fundraising, using all formats and media for scientific dissemination (print, digital, and audiovisual). A biannual program of events will enable us to share our current research and its results with all our audiences. You will already find some examples of this within these pages, through the first two programs launched: “Arts” and “Oceans.”

2025 is also the year that marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Fernand Braudel, founder of the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme, to whom the Foundation will pay tribute with a major scientific event. Under the chairmanship of Sanjay Subrahmanyam, professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, an international symposium bringing together researchers from around the world will be held at the “Maison” on November 27 and 28, 2025. This will be an opportunity to reflect on his major works, such as The Mediterranean, which directly inspired our “Oceans” program. This anniversary will also be marking by the reissue of History as a Measure of the World, a text by Fernand Braudel based on lectures he gave while in captivity during World War II, and by the creation of new audiovisual productions that will honor his passion for sharing his knowledge with the public.

From reflections on Fernand Braudel's work to the “Oceans” and “Arts” programs, including the challenges of disseminating the humanities and social sciences, this issue paints a portrait of a Foundation that remains faithful to its heritage while embracing new horizons.
