Writing a political history of universities is an ambitious undertaking; it required the author to produce a work of scholarship that demanded both rigour and clarity. This work, which is both meticulous and lucid, could undoubtedly only have been the work of a lecturer and researcher who has also held the highest positions in university administration and on governing bodies, his experience having enriched both his understanding and his knowledge.
