Hugo Vermeren

Hugo Vermeren is a CNRS research fellow (UMR 7303 TELEMMe), specializing in contemporary Maghreb and the environmental history of colonization. His publications include Les Italiens à Bône (1865-1940). Migrations méditerranéennes et colonisation de peuplement en Algérie (2017). Coordinator of the “Gouverner les îles” ("Governing the islands") program hosted by the Ecole Française de Rome and member of the Back3M program devoted to the history of monk seal colonies in the Pelagos area, he is particularly interested in the role of fishing activities in the territorialization processes of lagoon and island spaces, colonial fisheries management policies, and the historical production of norms and knowledge about the sea.

The project

Title: Eco-history of marine conservation in the Maghreb (withTarik Ghodbani)

The ECOHISMA “Eco-history of marine conservation in the Maghreb” research network aims to develop a common, interdisciplinary reflection on the discourses, practices and knowledge around which the management of marine resources in the Maghreb has been developed since the mid-19th century to the present day. This network project is based on a team of European and North African researchers, whose work lies at the intersection of disciplinary fields in the social sciences and humanities and marine sciences. Planned over two years (2025-2026), the ECOHISMA network's activities are aimed at pooling research data and survey methodologies, disseminating the work of its members to research communities and the general public, and training young researchers from the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean.
