Victoria Garcia argentine lettres exil

Victoria García is a professor at the University of Buenos Aires and assistant researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET). After her PhD in Letters in 2014, with a thesis on the testimonial work of Argentine writer Rodolfo Walsh, she worked on the artistic and political uses of testimony in contemporary Argentine and Latin American culture, as well as on theories of testimony and factual narrative. In 2019, she was a visiting researcher at the University of Paris VIII.

The project

Title: Les langues du témoignage. Une recherche sur la production testimoniale des exilés argentins en France pendant la dernière dictature militaire

The project seeks to study the testimonial productions of Argentines exiled in France between 1976 and 1983. It aims to systematize the testimonies in the diversity of supports and modalities they have assumed and to study the testimonies as a specific discursivity, in which diverse strategies of reconstruction of personal identity are deployed. The research suggests that the linguistic, cultural and political distance of Argentine exiles from the French context was both a condition of possibility and a limit for their testimonial practice: on the one hand, it provided a space for listening to the testimonies, sheltered from the direct impact of repression; on the other, it fixed the conceptual frameworks within which the transmission of the exiles' experience and the reconstruction of their identity took place, giving rise to tensions and silences that can be traced in the analysis of the testimonial discourse.
