The project

TitleJehan d’Ivray (1861-1940): une voyageuse singulière et une passeuse de cultures

"Our research focuses on the literary output of the writer Jehan d’Ivray, whose work remains relatively obscure despite existing studies that are primarily biographical or historical in nature (Ragan, 2022, 2025; El Diwani, 2008). All archives pertaining to her work are preserved at the Marguerite Durand Library.

We intend to study Jehan d’Ivray’s unpublished literary works—comprising short stories and tales—by drafting summaries and establishing a chronology, with the goal of producing an analytical bibliography of her oeuvre.

More specifically, we will examine the unpublished short stories and tales, which number over 310 documents.

Our objectives are as follows: to categorise the tales according to genre; to highlight the intercultural dimension of this writer—acting as a bridge across cultural boundaries—through her unpublished stories; and finally, to analyse her perspectives on women and their roles in Egyptian society, particularly during the period of significant upheaval associated with the Nahda reform movement."
