Mariarosa Bricchi
Mariarosa Bricchi is Professor of History of the Italian Language at the University of Pavia. Her research interests include 19th and 20th century Italian language, examined through textual linguistics and authorial philology, with particular focus on the syntactic and textual architecture of literary prose, lexicography and grammar from the 18th century to the present, and the history of translation.
The project
Title: The Early Reception of Alessandro Manzoni in France (1822–1832): Translations, Translators,Paratexts, and Literary Criticism
"This project examines the early reception of Alessandro Manzoni in France between 1822 and 1832, with particular attention to the paratexts and literary reviews that accompanied the translations of his tragedies and his novel I promessi sposi. Through an analysis of these materials, the study seeks to investigate how Manzoni’s works were reframed for a French readership and how they were positioned within the literary and cultural landscape of early nineteenth-century France. The research focuses both on the editorial strategies that shaped these publications and on the critical discourse that accompanied them in the French press. Drawing on archival and library research, the project will uncover the mechanisms of cultural transfer that enabled the transformation of Manzoni’s image: from that of a young intellectual associated with the liberal circles of the elite and recognized as one of the foremost advocates of new ideas concerning Romantic tragedy, to that of the author of a widely discussed European novel. In doing so, the project contributes to the study of translation as a process of cultural negotiation, as well as to the analysis of how literary reputation is constructed beyond national borders."
