Christiane Schönfeld studied Art History and Germanic Languages & Literatures at the Universities of Freiburg and Bonn in Germany before moving to the US, where she graduated with a PhD (thesis on the representation of the prostitute in German Expressionism) at The Pennsylvania State University in 1994. After lecturing in the UK and Ireland, she was appointed Head of the Department of German Studies at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick, Ireland, in 2009. She is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and Chair of W+IGS.
