The project

Title« La « sororité des commerçantes » de la filière pêche face à la crise économique à Haïti.

"Haiti, a territory in "underdevelopment" in the insular Caribbean, suffers from an economy undermined by the recurrence of natural disasters, the degradation of security conditions, fluctuations in the international market for imported goods, and the taxation imposed by gangs on national roads. This situation has exacerbated the decline in purchasing power alongside the rise of political instability, knowing that nearly 60% of the Haitian population lives in poverty. Despite these challenges, a market system for the commercialization of fishery resources persists outside the capital, Port-au-Prince. It is driven by a self-organized network consisting of a "sisterhood of traders" and a "brotherhood of subsistence fishermen." The sisterhood of traders, a key player in a "globalization of the poor" fueled by fishing in Haiti, has transformed coastal towns and peripheral islands into true supply hubs. It thus contributes to the 130 million US dollars generated annually by marine fishing, according to the Inter-American Development Bank (2012).
How does this sisterhood manage to reinvent itself amid an economic crisis while also influencing that crisis? This question will be addressed by examining the gendered division of labor within the fishing sector, particularly in the context of the Île-à-Vache National Natural Park in the South Department of Haiti."
