Accumulations and accelerations: Computer totalitarianism II

The attendance at the 10 sessions of the first seminar devoted to the totalizing influence of information technology and the proliferation of critical publications on the subject justify a second session. It will explore a number of untruths: ‘dematerialisation’ is proving to be ecologically burdensome and humanly oppressive; the emancipatory prophecy of the Internet conceals unprecedented centralisation and bureaucratisation; virtual currencies are a pipe dream and ‘artificial intelligence’, as dumb as other machines, masks issues of power and profit. And it conceals the main danger, namely that man's intelligence will become machine-like and that he will lose his inner life.

Some of the forces driving the computerisation of the world will be examined, starting with the supposedly practical services provided by the smartphone : the automation of everyday life is highly attractive to human beings who are in a hurry everywhere and separated from their fellow human beings. More fundamentally, the ‘new information and communication technologies’ are part of a quest for omnipotence and are based on an illusory triple promise: human life could be understood as the production and exchange ofinformation, which would be a source of knowledge and a vector of meaning, and communication would make it possible to improve society.

Based on an interactive teaching approach, the seminar is free of charge and does not require registration. It is open to all interested parties, in particular students and researchers in the humanities, law and philosophy.
