Intensifying accumulations and accelerations: Olympic games or serious?

2022 programme | Seminar Series

"Faster, Higher, Stronger’: barely nuanced by the addition of ‘together,’ the Olympic motto emphasizes competition and summarizes the capitalist frenzy where growth and acceleration mutually condition each other. In 2024, the succession of world championships will culminate with the first Summer Olympics in France since those in Paris in 1924. Necessarily deficit-ridden—when selecting the host city, the most extravagant bid is chosen (which overestimates the benefits and underestimates the costs)—the Olympics are an investment in a one-dimensional forward flight driven by quantitative rankings, ‘where sport will be celebrated at every street corner’ (Paris 2024 bid document). The goal is to showcase territories and populations to project them into global competition.

If Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics and a beneficiary of rewards, including financial ones, from the Nazi regime, celebrated ‘the grand success of the Berlin Games’ in 1936, ‘illuminated by the strength and discipline of Hitler,’ it is because ‘sport will kill eroticism,’ and the Olympics, far from embodying a playful spirit, impose a fascist conditioning on both athletes and populations. The spread of military values—hierarchy and obedience, uniforms and parades, suffering and sacrifice, virility and heroism—is complemented by an invitation to release. Social diversity fades in this nationalist outlet for frustrations and the spectacularization of public life.

Based on an interactive pedagogy, the seminar, which is free and does not require registration, is aimed at all interested individuals, particularly students and researchers in the humanities, law, and philosophy.
