Accumulations, accelerations, Covid-19: From viral frenzy to alternatives.

2021 programme | Seminar series

The capitalist organization of human life, particularly competition, has gradually established a mechanism of accumulations and accelerations that now threatens the survival of the species on ecological, socio-economic, and psychological levels. This observation, drawn from the 48 sessions of the seminar since 2015, is dramatically confirmed by the pandemic, a revenge of nature against the quest for omnipotence. This quest seeks to persist through the totalitarian computerization of life.

To loosen the grip of frenzy and the artificialization of the world, and to better accept our condition as mortal beings dependent on others, we should reduce competition and authoritarianism, which are powerless against the virus. Therefore, let’s develop popular control over major investments, industrial production, and management, with enterprises no longer solely serving shareholders. More broadly, let’s experiment with governance by the people, based on decentralized and contradictory deliberation, to approach the democratic promise that remains unfulfilled today, as the Constitution forbids voters from holding elected officials accountable. Let’s abandon the spiral of security surveillance that feeds on its inexorable and continuous failure, and replace it with safety, a realizable commitment from citizens to prioritize law over force in times of conflict.
