Nationalism, Nation-Building, and the Decline of Empires

Through its lectures, workshops, the Seminars and Conference will seek a structural, in-depth understanding of the way wars and the collapse of empires between the 19th and 20th centuries have allowed for the formation and strengthening of national identities and narratives, as well as the self-recognition of nations emerging from such processes in the global arena. It will focus primarily on dynamics that have emerged from the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Russian empires and how these have led to the reappearance of nationalism on the international stage.

The Seminars, taking the place of our former Summer School, is structured in lectures and workshops. The lectures (two) will take place each morning, from Monday to Wednesday and will be followed each afternoon by workshops.  Each student will be assigned to one workshop group.

The workshop structure will include three practical sessions followed by thematic sessions that will address the topics discussed during the lectures and throughout the week.

The practical sessions will be on the following:

• Writing and disseminating research through sounds and images
• Horizon Europe funding opportunities and recommendations
• Databases as a tool for Social Sciences and Humanities. An introduction through MySQL

The practical workshops will be followed by thematic sessions in which students discuss and elaborate one specific issue of the overall topic and prepare a group presentation on the last day of the Seminars and Conference.

Presentation during the Reset DOC Seminars and attendance (40%); final paper to be submitted three weeks after the end of the summer school (60%).

Seminars are open to students or young scholars in the field of humanities, social and political science, or law from any background. A good working knowledge of English is required.

NB: In order to receive the certificate of attendance of the Summer School, attendance to all lectures, workshops, and conference is mandatory.

Smalll grants are available to aid participation in the Seminars and Conference, however the budget is limited and grants will be issued until funds are available, depending on student CVs, cover letters, and travel distance to Dublin.

In order to receive the grant, attendance at all lessons and workshops of the Seminars, and attendance for the whole duration of the Conference is mandatory.

CLEARLY STATE IN YOUR APPLICATION WHETHER OR NOT YOU WILL BE APPLYING FOR A GRANT. 

The GRANT will be delivered in cash on Saturday the 27th of May 2023.
