Sihem Kchaou

Sihem Kchaou is a lecturer in the History Department of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Humanities at the University of Manouba, and a member of the Cultures, Technologies and Philosophical Approaches Laboratory (Philab) at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Tunis.

She was also a member of the Board of the University of Manouba from 2017 to 2020.

She obtained her DEA, Agrégation, Doctorate, and Habilitation from the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences of the University of Tunis. From 2011 to 2018, she was a permanent researcher at the Institut Supérieur d'Histoire de la Tunisie Contemporaine, University of Manouba.

The project

Title: Objects and the Construction of Gendered Identities: The Case of 18th-Century French Nobility

"Do objects have a gender? Today, some items are perceived as distinctly feminine or are exclusively associated with women—clothing, underwear, school or work uniforms, cosmetics, jewellery, utensils, mirrors, games, and so on. Others are considered masculine. But is this gender-based distinction in objects relevant to modern France? In other words, did men and women in this period have their own specific objects? And what do these appropriations and distinctions mean?

Objects—these seemingly mundane things—have long been viewed as witnesses to society, offering insight into its social, symbolic, and gendered structures. In 1968, Jean Baudrillard argued that objects formed a coherent system of signs long before they became commodities of consumer society. Objects carry multiple meanings and reflect both the particular world and personal experiences of those who use them. They allow us to access fragments of everyday life.

The study of material culture thus provides a valuable lens through which to explore how societies operate via their relationship with objects. The role of objects in the construction of gendered identities was notably addressed in the 2012 volume Les objets ont-ils un genre ? Culture matérielle et production sociale des identités sexuées, edited by anthropologists Élisabeth Anstett and Marie-Luce Gélard."
