The project

Title: Franco-Brazilian Sociology of Intellectuals and Culture

"Several studies on the Brazilian reception of Pierre Bourdieu’s work highlight that the integration of qualitative and quantitative techniques and methods has not been fully achieved. In particular, the quantitative dimension of his approach has been scarcely employed within Brazilian sociology. This project seeks to address this gap. From an institutional perspective, it aims to strengthen the ties and partnerships previously established by members of the team with the CESSP. From a scientific perspective, it seeks to deepen discussions on the use of quantitative and qualitative methods in Brazilian social sciences, especially within the field of “sociology of culture.” In a global and critical dialogue with the Brazilian tradition of cultural sociology—primarily inspired by Bourdieu—this proposal endeavors to create favorable conditions for overcoming the qualitative versus quantitative dichotomy, by incorporating and further developing quantitative techniques and methods within the institutions where the team members are based. To this end, a partnership with the Centre Européen de Sociologie et de Science Politique (CESSP-Paris) is essential, as it constitutes an internationally renowned reference center for studies in cultural sociology and for the global dissemination of Bourdieu’s approach. Moreover, the researchers in our team have collaborated with colleagues at CESSP at various points in their careers. Technical internships and methodological training will enable us to develop all stages of constructing, preparing, and utilizing databases in thematic areas that have not yet been addressed through quantitative methods in Brazilian sociology. At the same time, they will foster a nuanced incorporation of these techniques, attentive to the specificities of contexts other than those in which they originally emerged."
