Roberta Coglitore

Roberta Coglitore is associate professor of literary criticism and comparative literature. She is coordinator of the PhD in Visual Culture and Deputy Head of the Department of Cultures and Society at the University of Palermo. She teaches Literary Communication, Literature and Visual Culture and Contemporary Italian Culture at the University of Palermo.

The project

Title: Annie Ernaux's autobiographical phototext

The aim of the research project on Annie Ernaux's autobiographical photo-text is to study the relationship between her autobiographical writing and photography, both in the preparation of the texts and in the production of the photo-textual works. Ernaux sees photography, in the same way as diary writing, as a device of truth, which makes it possible to restore the pure dimension of past time and the anachronistic resurgence of past moments, and also makes it possible, through juxtapositions and superimpositions of images, to represent the fragmentation of the self, an essential element of all contemporary autobiographical writing. To reconstruct the complex dynamics of Ernaux's autobiographical photo-text, it is useful to analyse the manuscripts and preparatory documents for the works in question: L'usage de la photo (2005) with Marc Marie, L'autre fille (2011), Photojournal (2011), Les Années (2008), Retour à Yvetot (2013 and 2023) and the film Les Années Super 8 (2022).
