Lyubov Bobchynets

Lyubov Bobchynets is a linguist and lecturer at Kiev National Linguistic University (Department of Spanish and Greek Philology and Translation Theory and Practice).

Her research focuses on linguistic landscapes as an expression of multilingualism in society, and in particular on ergonyms (a term introduced by Bauer 1985) or chrematonyms (Galkovsky 2014), representing a subcategory of proper names that constitute trade names, with an emphasis on their most notable feature: wordplay and the presence of multilingual mixed ergonyms as a significant element of the multilingual linguistic landscape.

The project

Title: Plurilingual wordplay in ergonyms as a part of the linguistic landscapes of Lyon and Kyiv

"The subject of the research project is ergonyms with wordplay, in particular the multilingual ergonyms of the cities of Lyon and Kiev, which have an international dimension for a variety of historical, economic and socio-cultural reasons.

The originality of the research project lies in its focus on comparative studies of the creative potential of ergonyms and their nominators, with an emphasis on plurilingual wordplay in ergonyms from the linguistic landscapes of Lyon and Kiev, which have not yet been the subject of comparative linguistic landscape studies. The mixture of languages in plurilingual ergonyms highlights the popularity of English in the linguistic landscapes of many European cities. The aims of the research project include a structural analysis (modes of creation of plurilingual ergonyms combining letters, morphemes or lexemes from two or more languages, transliteration, transcription, partial translation, mixing); a functional analysis of plurilingual ergonymic space; a quantitative analysis of plurilingual ergonymic space; an analysis of plurilingual ergonymic space; a quantitative analysis of the structural peculiarities of the ergonyms studied."
