The project
Title: Times of political radicalization and speaking the unspeakable: Brazil and France in comparative perspective
"A series of phenomena have altered the parameters within which politics evolves in democratic countries, whether in "consolidated democracies" or "third-wave" democracies. At the same time, an avalanche of analyses is emerging, seeking to describe and conceptualize them, through diagnoses of the crisis of representation, the emergence of populism or the crisis of democracy. A correlated phenomenon has been the rise of the far right, with the normalization of hate speech and intolerance in public debate and the emergence of political leaders who, with rhetoric critical of the political system and traditional political elites, present themselves as outsiders. Faced with this situation, we propose to study, from a comparative perspective, two concrete cases, France and Brazil, based on empirical elements that have constituted the political process of the last decade, both on the "demand side" (based on questionnaires and electoral surveys) and on the "supply side" (analysis of the background, profile and elements of discourse) of political leaders of national scope, elected or not; in this case, Jair Bolsonaro and Marine Le Pen. It is hoped that this comparison will enrich the debate on the crisis of liberal democracies.
