The project

Title: Florestan Fernandes and Brazilian Sociological Thought

"The project aims to analyze the sociologist's contribution to the construction of Brazilian democratic educational policy during the period in which he sat in the National Congress, as a federal deputy, elected by popular vote to fill the mandates of 1987 to 1990 and 1991 to 1995. The aim of the research is to interpret his work in defence of public education as an academic, parliamentarian, activist and columnist in the 1980s and 1990s. The Brazilian education problem permeates his sociological production from the 1940s until his last writings in 1995. It is important to pursue the social value attributed by the author to education as a central element for benefiting from economic, political and social development and cultural autonomy, as well as to dialogue with the critical fortune of the work, particularly the reflections that lie at the interface between sociology and education. In this sense, Brazilian education appears in the field of sustainable development, with a strong impact on the population's quality of life and the country's progress. Consequently, the research is empirically situated in the socio-historical repertoire of Florestan Fernandes' contribution to Brazilian education in the 1980s and 1990s, being able to clarify and support the cycle of public social policies."
