The project

Title: From Analog Experimental Poetry to Digital Experimental Poetry: Diverging and Converging Lines in France and Latin America since the Mid-20th Century.

"In the context of the long research tradition developed on digital literature by Laboratoire Paragraphe (Université Paris 8), and of two ongoing research projects in France – “Jean-Pierre Balpe, auteur de littérature numérique française. Documenter, analyser et valoriser une œuvre fondatrice aux périmètres fuyants” (MHS Paris Nord, project code 24 1 A 3), co-led by Erika Fülöp (Toulouse 2) and Alexandra Saemmer (Paris 8), and “Patrimoine littéraire nativement numérique en France : pour une mémoire collective dynamique” (PLiN, Labex SMS, Université Toulouse 2 Jean Jaurès) led by Erika Fülöp - this project is based on research involving archival work and interviews with key actors of French born digital poetry, to be carried out from 1 to 30 June 2025, on the basis of two documentary collections housed in French institutions. These are, on the one hand, the documents by and about the poet, publisher and performer Julien Blaine (1942-), held at the Bibliothèque National Française (BNF), and at the Institut Mémoires de l'édition contemporaine (IMEC), and on the other hand, the documentary archive (textual and digital) donated to the BNF (Archives et manuscrits) by the poet, teacher and theorist of digital literature Jean-Pierre Balpe (1942-). The aim is to explore the constitution of two genealogical lines of digital poetry, which may have operated in parallel, but which at the same time allow bridges to be built that take into account key aspects of the (pre)history of digital literature."
