Cheick Sakho

A specialist in African oral traditions, Cheick Sakho is the author of a dissertation entitled “The Toorodɓe Revolution of 1776 and Its Narrativization”. A professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University, his research focuses, among other topics, on the relationships between orality and writing, the Islamization of West African oral traditions, the remediation of orality, and textual genetics. He is the Head of the Doctoral Program in African Studies at the Doctoral School of Arts, Cultures and Civilizations at UCAD.

The project

Title: "L’œuvre littéraire de Amadou Hampâté Ba au prisme de la méthode génétique"

"In this research project, we will examine the four files entitled “Amadou Hampâté Bâ” preserved in the Théodore Monod collection at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (reference Ms Md 138–139). Our aim will be to analyze these documents through the lens of genetic criticism in order to shed light on their writing process. As a specialist in Fulani oral literature, we will focus primarily on a particular aspect of these files, namely the unpublished manuscripts in the Fulani language (whose exact number remains to be determined after inventory). As is well known, the Malian traditionalist drew most of his work from the Fulani oral heritage, which he greatly helped to preserve and promote. We will therefore seek to determine how the genetic method can contribute to a better understanding of the writings of Amadou Hampâté Bâ, as well as the extent to which this analytical method can help define more precisely the boundary between Fulani oral tradition and literary creation in his work."
