The project
Title: Politics and Theatre in Times of Crisis
"The question of politics in contemporary France and Europe ultimately returns to the issue of the foundations of living together. This project aims to examine how this question is addressed on the stages of Paris’s three most prominent theatres: the Odéon–Théâtre de l’Europe, the Comédie-Française, and the Théâtre de la Ville. The plays selected for analysis will be chosen according to a broad criterion defined by a renowned scholar of political theatre history: “Political theatre creates situations before the audience that are important to many, to a majority of people—perhaps to all. It stages possible ways of acting in such situations, presents them in a critical light, and calls upon us to be critical” (Melchinger, 1971).
This research will engage dramatic artists in the dialogue surrounding the political. What do contemporary stagings of classical works in Parisian theatres reveal about the relationship between life and form, between freedom and order? What do today’s playwrights identify as the root causes of the current crisis? What does the new form of living together—emerging from artistic imagination—look like for the French and Europeans? And what do the scenographies of these plays disclose about the norms governing human behavior in the real lives of French citizens?
These are some of the central questions this research seeks to explore."
