"Jardins en commun(s). Politiser l'écologie ordinaire"

Shared gardens may be seen as a fad for urban dwellers in search of greenery, but they have a long history of reclaiming land in response to privatisation or abandonment. As well as being a simple area to cultivate, they raise many questions about social organisation as we know it.

About the author

Victoria Sachsé has a doctorate in geography and works at the frontier between social geography and political sociology. Her thesis looks at shared gardens in Rome and Strasbourg as places for appropriating public space, encouraging citizen participation and experimenting with new commonalities. His work also examined the interaction between the city and ‘nature’. In his later experiments, his thinking broadened to include food systems on a more global scale, in order to observe the transformations at work on different scales and the contribution of different players (farmers, citizens, businesses, local authorities, etc.) to these changes.
