The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH) has joined the Ocean & Climate Platform (POC), an international collective bringing together over 115 organisations committed to a healthy ocean and a protected climate. This membership reflects the FMSH’s commitment to bringing the voice of the humanities and social sciences into discussions on marine environmental protection.

An international platform for the ocean and climate

Established in 2014 with the support of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, the Ocean & Climate Platform brings together research institutes, NGOs, businesses and public institutions around a common goal: raising awareness of the ocean’s essential role in climate regulation and promoting its integration into climate policies.

By joining the platform, the FMSH seeks to foreground the humanities and social sciences in debates on marine protection and to underline their vital contribution to understanding the human dynamics that shape it.

The FMSH's "Oceans" programme

This membership continues the multi-year ‘Oceans’ programme launched in 2025 by the FMSH. The programme aims to:

  • support interdisciplinary research on ocean systems;
  • create a network bringing together researchers, decision-makers and civil society;
  • disseminate knowledge to transform our relationship with the ocean.

Two initial initiatives were launched in 2025: a call for projects to encourage research teams and networks working on ocean issues, and a series of meetings bringing together researchers and field practitioners to discuss the social, economic and cultural issues linked to the ocean.

Through these actions, the FMSH aims to promote a global approach to the ocean, conceived as a complex world system, and to contribute to a renewed and shared understanding of ocean and climate challenges.

About the FMSH

Founded in 1963, the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme advances research in the humanities and social sciences to deepen our understanding of past, present and future worlds, and to address the shared challenges facing humanity. Recognised as a foundation of public interest, the FMSH develops programmes and services for the benefit of all scientific communities, accelerating the creation and dissemination of knowledge on a global scale.
