Presentation of the project

"The work I'm about to present is part of a research project I've been carrying out over the last few years on the career of Brazilian composer and performer João do Vale. The general aim of the research has been to study the problem of the construction of national-popular culture and its reflections on his artistic career. I had discussed the ambiguities of the notion of “popular”, linked to the mechanisms of circulation of Brazilian popular music during the 1950s and 1980s. I questioned the maintenance and weakness of cultural hierarchies, using the artist's career as an object. After a brief introduction to the origins of my research, I'll move on to present the internationalization of his career, as well as that of other Brazilian popular music artists involved in the Kalunga Project, a musical tour of Brazilian artists to Angola in 1980. Thirdly, I will describe my general methodological framework, and finally I will present the results I have achieved."
