Yasin Koc holds a PhD in social psychology (University of Sussex). He began his career as a lecturer at the University of Groningen. Recognised as a Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science (APS), he also received a short-term research sabbatical from Princeton University.

His research focuses on marginalised identities and intergroup relations, aiming to improve the status and well-being of minority groups. He uses experimental and mixed methods to transform the attitudes and behaviours of majority groups to reduce the systemic burdens on minorities.

He is currently leading a funded project on intergroup apologies, with fieldwork in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Cyprus, on polarising social issues. As part of the DEA programme, he will also conduct a study on the needs and challenges of older queer migrants from Turkey, exploring their experiences of multiple marginalisation.

The project

Title: Intersectionality of Queer, Older Migrants from Turkey: Needs and Challenges in Aging from a Social Psychological Perspective

"The ageing experiences of individuals who occupy multiple marginalised identities—particularly older queer migrants from non-Western countries living in Western contexts—remain understudied in social psychology. This research aims to address this gap by examining how older Turkish queer migrants navigate the complexities of ageing, migration, and sexual identity, and how these intersecting identities affect their psychological well-being in France.

Understanding these experiences is crucial for two main reasons. First, identifying their psychological, social, and health needs will provide a deeper understanding of the challenges they face, including discrimination, social isolation, and barriers to accessing healthcare. Second, by highlighting these needs, this research can inform interventions and policies that more effectively support this population, thereby enhancing their quality of life and ensuring access to appropriate social and health services."
