The project

Title: Nietzsche and the idea of religion: Dionysus, Zarathustra, Antichrist

"The research I intend to undertake during my stay in Paris is aimed at elucidating Nietzsche's thoughts on religion, to shed light on both strategies it adopts and the perspective it embraces. This will give me the opportunity to reflect on the problems of the present day, such as the relationship between false information and faith, or between prejudice or conviction and belief. This research project consists of four stages. First of all, using a methodology of analysis that is both structural and genetic of the Nietzschean corpus, I'd like to start by examining the conceptions of religion that are present. Then, taking as a starting point the analysis of L'Antéchrist, I hope to examine Nietzsche's reasons for his vehement criticism of the Christian religion, while exploring the relationship between belief, lies and faith. In a third stage, I intend to assess the extent to which Thus Spoke Zarathustra constitutes as Nietzsche would have it, the “fifth Gospel”, with a view to elucidating the main features of the conception of religion it presents. Finally, my hypothesis is that, in the texts of his maturity, Nietzsche conceives of a new religion, whose central element is the figure of Dionysus. It's not a question of rediscovering religion as traditionally understood, and even less to rediscover faith or the nostalgia of belief. Nor is it a matter of defending the need for the sacred and transcendent. On the level of immanence, Dionysian religion envisages Dionysus as the divinization of existence."
