Pablo Buchbinder

Pablo Buchbinder is full professor of contemporary history and general history of education at the University of Buenos Aires, where he obtained his doctorate. He is also a Conicet Senior Researcher at the Instituto de Historia Argentina y Americana E. Ravignani. He was coordinator of the history and memory program at the University of Buenos Aires. His research and publications focus on various aspects of the history of universities and university policy in Argentina and Latin America, the history of intellectuals and the history of historiography.

The project

Title: Cultural Diplomacy and University Exchanges: Argentina. 1900-1930.

"The aim of this research is the internationalization of the academic world in Buenos Aires between 1900 and 1939. After the First World War, the concern to strengthen the cultural side of foreign policy gained particular strength among the great powers. In this context, sections dedicated to cultural, academic and scientific aspects have been created in the Diplomatic Services. The place occupied by cultural policy since then must be understood in the light of the assessment that the leaders of the various states made of the weaknesses of their foreign policy. While the idea that economic or military pressure could exert only limited influence had emerged in the early years of the 20th century, it was after the First World War that cultural policy took on an increasingly important role. It was seen as a decisive means of winning public support in neutral countries. The intensification of cultural ties was also seen as one of the mechanisms for creating an environment of greater cordiality between nations and peoples."
