Nora Ratzmann

Coordinator of The (un)deserving migrant? Interrogating non-conventional bordering practices in the European space project

Biography

Nora Ratzmann is affiliated with the Centre for the Analysis for Social Exclusion, and the International Inequalities Institute, at the London School of Economics, and the Collèges d’études mondiales, Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme in Paris, where she co-coordinates the research project ‘The (Un)deserving migrant?’. In spring 2018, she held a mobility fellowship to conduct her research at FMSH within the programme initiated by the Centre de recherche en sciences sociales de Berlin (WZB).

She currently works as a Researcher at the Expert Council of German Foundations on Migration and Integration, Berlin, Germany on issues relating to migration governance between the European Union and Africa.

Nora completed her PhD at the Department for Social Policy, London School of Economics, supported by a Leverhulme doctoral fellowship. Her doctoral research focused the experiences of EU migrants when seeking to obtain social protection in Germany. The qualitative study explored how administrative practices in local job centres construct inequalities in access to basic subsistence benefits based on ideas of belonging and deservingness, contributing to an enhanced understanding of the links between social protection regulation and internal governance processes of EU
