Mona Ashour Soukar
Mona Ashour is a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology and Graeco-Roman Studies department at the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University, Egypt. She specializes in Graeco-Roman Archaeology and she is a Numismatist.
She holds a PhD in Archaeology and Graeco-Roman Studies from Alexandria University, with a dissertation on the Alexandrian coinage of Commodus. Her research experience includes an International Numismatic Council doctoral grant for one month (2019) at the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, as well as international research and training activities in France, Greece, Belgium, Cyprus, and Egypt.
Her current research is carried out in collaboration with the HiSoMA Laboratory (Histoire et Sources des Mondes Antiques) in Lyon.
The project
Title: The Coinage of Constantine I and His Family. An Iconographic Study Based on a Collection of Coins Preserved in the Graeco-Roman Museum, Alexandria – Egypt.
This research project examines approximately 250 late Roman coins preserved in the Graeco-Roman Museum in Alexandria and dating to the reigns of Constantine I and his sons, from AD 306 to 361.
The project aims to produce a scientifically documented catalogue of this unpublished material and to investigate the relationship between coinage, imperial ideology, monetary reform, and religious transformation during one of the most significant periods in Roman history.
The study combines metrological, iconographical, epigraphic, and typological analysis. Particular attention is given to imperial portraits and titulature, mint marks, denominations and weight standards, as well as the changing religious and political imagery appearing on the coins, including the emergence of Christian symbols during the Constantinian period.
The research will contribute to the study of Late Roman and early Byzantine numismatics, while making previously unpublished Egyptian numismatic material accessible to the international scholarly community.
