Title: The philosophy of meaning in Roland Barthes

"The last book published in Roland Barthes' lifetime, in 1980, Camera Lucida is dedicated to Jean-Paul Sartre of The Imaginary. In consigning it, the various commentators on the later Barthes generally omit that the book belongs to a Sartrean diptych that includes Imagination. This is perhaps to remain silent about the fact that Sartrism begins, already in the 1930s, the year in which both works were written, with the innovative phenomenological notes we find there concerning the power of the image's action. But the erasure of the importance of these introductory texts increases when, amidst the philosopher's famous experiences with mescaline, in one of his updating forays into Sartre's itinerary, François Noudelman comes to the field to observe that all this initial production is preceded by an academic paper from 1927, prepared to obtain a higher education diploma, entitled "L'image dans la psychologie, rôle et nature," in which the young Sartre is already grappling with a dismantling of classical metaphysics that consider the image as a mental thing, and willing to integrate the imaginary of the image, even when modified by drugged states, into the field of a new philosophy. He takes the opportunity to warn that, almost a century after such triggering events, Sartrism can and should go beyond Sartrism, and that it is necessary to rediscover Sartre after Sartre (Noudelman, 2020, p. 18)."
