The project
Title: The National Association of French Holders of Foreign Securities and the Loans of Latin American Countries in the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries: an instrument of Financial Pressure and Bank Collusion (1870/80-1914/24)
"This project builds on several previous studies on debt and the establishment of central banks in Caribbean plantation economies during the period 1947–1979. It also builds on research into the establishment of French commercial banks in the Caribbean in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its purpose is to examine the role that small French bondholders played in this wave of bank establishment in the region and in other countries on the continent. It draws on several manuscript sources, newspaper articles, and reports from the Association (ANPFVE), which small bondholders had founded in 1898 to defend their interests against issuing governments that, during periods of political and economic crisis, found ways to avoid honoring their obligations. It also addresses the banks that did everything in their power during these periods—often in collusion with other European financial institutions, particularly British ones—to increase their profits at the expense of the small shareholders."
