The project

Titre: Prophetism and messianism in Brazil: ethnography and history

Anthropological and sociological literature has often pointed to the presence in Brazil of religious manifestations, attested since the 16th century, generally defined as "prophetic" or "messianic" movements.
Since the work of A. Métraux in the 1920s, ethnology has carried out a great deal of research into the migration of Tupi-Guarani Indians to the "Land without Evil", the mythical terrestrial paradise, the land of ancestors and great shamans, where "one does not die".
Later, researchers turned their attention to the religious movements, marked by eschatological and millenarian expectations, that occurred among peasant populations between 800 and 900. These expectations were generally linked to Sebastianism, the Portuguese messianic belief in the return to the throne of Portugal of the young King Sebastian I, who disappeared during the Battle of the Three Kings in Alcácer-Quibir, North Africa, in 1578, and who, according to legend, did not die.
