Published at 9 December 2021
Former student of the École normale supérieure (Ulm), associate professor of classical literature and doctorate, Christian Jacob is research director at the CNRS and, since 2008, director of studies at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales.
His research focuses on the history of knowledge in Greco-Roman Antiquity (literate scholarship, geography and ethnography) and more broadly throughout history, from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. From the end of the 1990s, his work on scholarly practices led him to become interested in the impact of new digital technologies on research, reading, writing and publishing in the humanities and social sciences.
Coordinator of several research networks (GDR then GDRI of the CNRS of the CNRS “Les Mondes lettrés”, 2002-2007; ACI of the Ministry of Research “The knowledge of reflexivity. A comparative history of intellectual practices”, 2003-2007), Christian Jacob directed the intellectual and editorial project of the Places of Knowledge (2002-2011), which gave rise to two volumes at Editions Albin Michel (2007-2011). Since 2019, he has been coordinating the Savoirs digital platform project, supported by various partners, EHESS, LabEx Hastec, FMSH, ENSSIB, BNU Strasbourg and EPFL Lausanne, Huma-Num, OpenEdition and the metopes research infrastructure.
