Ana Fernandes

Ana Fernandes is affiliated with the Faculty of Architecture at the Federal University of Bahia, where she is a full professor. She is an urban planner and currently heads the project "Urban Reform and its Circumstances in Latin American Countries 1950-1970: the construction and opacities of a slogan in urban policy" funded by CNPq. Urban policies, urban planning, and forms of structuring the contemporary city in Brazil are also at the center of her research, as well as formulations on corporate urbanism and urbanism as a power of the commons.

The project

Title: Urban reform in Brazil in the 1960s

"In Brazil, during a period of intense urbanization marked by insurgency and promises of planning, urban reform is being incorporated, both tentatively and insistently, into the federal government's reform program, mobilizing various political alliances and professional groups. An in-depth analysis of newspaper articles, as well as initiatives (proposed programs and laws, and their constant revisions) taken by the executive and legislative branches to implement urban reform in the country, reveals the existence of two main visions of urban reform in Brazil during this period: one conservative and the other progressive, involving various social and political segments. The banner of urban reform, which had almost disappeared after the 1964 military coup, was revived with the country's democratization process beginning in 1985."
