On 17 March, as part of the FMSH’s Oceans programme, the conference series ‘Plastics: a systemic poison’ was launched, organised in partnership with the Tara Ocean Foundation. During the first lecture, the speakers outlined the major challenges posed by plastic pollution and highlighted the system that has made plastics the invisible cornerstones of our economy. Watch a replay of this event and find out more about the 2026–2027 series.

The inaugural session, ‘Plastics: Key Players in the Global Ecological Crisis’, featured Henri Bourgeois-Costa, Director of Public Affairs at the Tara Ocean Foundation and co-organiser of the series. Interviewed by journalist Aurélie Luneau, he demonstrated, drawing on the work of Baptiste Monsaingeon, that plastic is inextricably linked to an economic model based on overproduction and planned obsolescence, serving the interests of the petrochemical industry.

About the series

Organised in partnership with the Tara Ocean Foundation, the series ‘Plastics: a systemic poison’ explores a form of pollution that has become global. Since the 1970s, scientific research has revealed the extent of the problem: from the oceans to the mountains, invisible microplastics are entering our bodies and disrupting ecosystems. The humanities and social sciences complete this picture by analysing the economic and social mechanisms of our dependence on plastics.

As the seventh round of negotiations for an international treaty opens this year, these meetings bring together researchers and civil society to share knowledge and inform public decisions. The aim is to collectively rethink our relationship with plastics and the environment.
