The term "peacebuilding" conjures up an all-too-familiar scenario: violence erupts, foreign countries get excited, peacekeepers rush in, donors pour in millions of dollars, warring parties sign agreements, the press makes headlines about peace at last, and a few months later the situation is back to where it started, if not worse. Yet, there are strategies that have helped build a lasting peace in conflict zones, especially for ordinary citizens. What are they? And why should other ordinary citizens, thousands of miles away, also learn from them?
