The ambition of this work is multiple. By questioning the origin of this discipline and the evolution of its relationship with many other sciences, it is first of all a question of taking stock of the current state of progress, of proposing a cartography of it. For this, some of the best specialists in the field have been called upon. But it is also about taking a critical look at the epistemology that it deploys and, on the other hand, to reflect on the challenges that it must take up in order to become fully visible.

Jean-Michel Geneste est conservateur général du patrimoine, il est notamment le coauteur de l’Atlas de la grotte Chauvet-Pont d’arc aux Éditions de la MSH.

Philippe Grosos est professeur de philosophie à l’université de Poitiers. Spécialiste d’art paléolithique et de préhistoire, il est notamment l’auteur de plusieurs livres aux Éditions du Cerf, notamment Des profondeurs de nos cavernes. Préhistoire Art Philosophie (2021).

Boris Valentin est professeur à l’université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. Il est l’auteur, avec Jean-Michel Geneste, de Si loin, si près. Pour en finir avec la Préhistoire (Flammarion, 2019).
