Deportation measures, like immigration laws, make frequent appearances on the political stage and in the media. However, the main stakeholders - the deportees themselves - have too little say in public debate.
By tracing the history of the Association Malienne des expulsés and other associations in Togo and Sierra Leone, Clara Lecadet looks at the human element behind the measure. What is the reality of expulsion for those who are sent back, sometimes after years in the host country? Taking into account the shame of deportation, the rejection of loved ones who had gone to great lengths to give one of their own the opportunity to leave, and the material difficulties entailed by this measure, the author describes the need for those deported to rebuild their lives as political subjects.
Clara Lecadet also shows how self-organization withstands the test of time, as part of an international network of associations and NGOs.
