Réseau international Islam
2022 winning project of the call "International Networks in HSS"

This international network is part of an interdisciplinary scientific collaboration involving countries in West Africa (Senegal; Ivory Coast) and Europe (France). It aims to create a research team on the development of Islamic faith-based schools in pluralistic societies characterised by a Muslim majority or minority. States are confronted with a growing demand for religious schooling, as alternative, complementary or parallel to formal, public, and secular education. This perspective implies considering temporalities in the diversity of religious and educational expressions situated in the different national historical configurations of the countries involved, as well as in the different spaces of transnational circulation. The diversity of the geographical areas of the countries involved illustrates both a heterogeneity of school models and religious dynamics, but also, at the same time, a transversality of the phenomenon in three societies marked by a groundswell of counter-secularisation, to put it in P. Berger's terms. This perspective questions the development of Islamic education in the face of conflicting school models in the context of the growing demand for God in schools over the last few decades. It is situated at the interface of institutional and actor logics, in addition to offering a framework for analysis and expertise on the links between citizens and the state through the school.
