Studies on France as an ethnographic terrain

The "Ethnologie de la France et des mondes contemporains" publishes research on France—both mainland France and its overseas territories, globally considered a prime ethnographic field—, exploring the dynamics of its history and the diversity of its societies, culture, and heritage. The collection also acts as a space for nourishing a brand of anthropology that constantly updates and reexamines the topics, concepts, and conditions of production in the field of social sciences. Drawing from a range of topics recognized as very diverse, the collection is based on a multidisciplinary form of anthropology that takes culture, heritage (both material and immaterial), and the French-speaking world as its preferred fields. Examining what is familiar in the light of the wider global context, the collection advocates a kind of ethnology that necessarily takes shape through dialogue and comparison, in Europe and worldwide.

Published in partnership with the Ministry of Culture, the collection “Ethnologie de la France et des mondes contemporains” brings together and complements the “Ethnologie de la France” and “Cahiers d’ethnologie de la France,”collections founded by Christine Langlois and active from 1983 to 2017.
