To mark the day commemorating the abolition of slavery in Guadeloupe, the Foundation is pleased to invite you to a discussion of the book Voukoum. Esprits rebelles du carnaval guadeloupéen (Voukoum: Rebellious Spirits of the Guadeloupean Carnival), published in partnership with the Fondation pour la Mémoire de l’Esclavage (Foundation for the Memory of Slavery).

Published on 17 April 2025 in the "Ethnologie de la France et des mondes contemporains" collection, this "Livres en dialogue"’ session will bring together author Flore Pavy and journalist Claudy Siar.

Following the discussion, you will have the opportunity to put your questions to our guests.

About the book

Drawing on the voices of carnival participants, this book offers a little-known perspective on the history of Guadeloupe and the distinctive place of the French West Indies within the Caribbean. Voukoum. Esprits rebelles du carnaval guadeloupéen invites readers into the life of a community that, in the face of racism, seeks to rebuild broken ancestral ties and to continually reinvent vital collective narratives.

About the speakers

Flore Pavy is a member of the Social Anthropology Laboratory at EHESS. Following extensive fieldwork in the West Indies, she was awarded the 2023 Thesis Prize by the Foundation for the Memory of Slavery for her research on Guadeloupe’s gwoup-a-po, supervised by Philippe Descola and Laurent Berger. Her work explores the social issues surrounding new rituals in the Caribbean. In the course of her research, she learned Creole, integrated into Guadeloupean society, and developed a participatory approach to ethnography.
