Ecological Transition and Social Justice

Inventing New Operating Models
  Transition écologique et justice sociale : Inventer de nouveaux modèles de fonctionnement

The current environmental crisis, to which has recently been added the global health crisis linked to the Covid-19 epidemic, poses an unprecedented challenge and calls for far-reaching changes in all political, economic and social practices, both at the individual and collective scales. Despite social and political awareness of the need and urgency for a transition, and despite research and technological advances on sustainability, the expected results are largely overdue. This is partly due to the fact that we do not have a sufficiently detailed and operational understanding of how transitions of this magnitude can be carried out, and to the absence of an overall project that can federate and commit citizens to act collectively, in a significant way, in favour of sustainability, for the thorough transformation of society and behaviour.

Because it implies the invention of new operating models to support and complement technical developments, the environmental transition seems only possible if it is fair and perceived as such. The relationship between environmental issues and the challenges of social justice, already posed by the Brundtland Commission 30 years ago, deserves to be put back at the center of discussions on sustainability and transition.

The call is open to researchers from all disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, starting at the doctoral level. Only the coordinator must be a registered researcher, associated or affiliated with a French research institution or higher education establishment that will host the project for its duration. The other members of the team may be doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows or researchers without affiliation in France or abroad.

The evaluation and selection of projects will be carried out by an ad hoc scientific committee and will focus mainly on :

  • their collaborative dimension, involving small teams of 3 to 6 people newly formed around one of the themes concerned and likely to form large research networks;
  • the originality of the problematic and the approach, paying particular attention to interdisciplinary and international projects.
  • The project is financed for two consecutive years with a total of 20 000€ (10 000€ per year);
  • The support covers the various types of expenses related to the project's activities (travel expenses, accommodation, food, event logistics, etc.), with the exception of salaries and wages other than those of service providers;
  • An agreement will be established between the FMSH and the institution to which each project coordinator belongs.
