The Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (FMSH) and the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) offer to postdoctoral researchers residing in France and having defended their thesis from 2018, a mobility grant of 2 to 3 months for a stay in connection with the structuring devices of the IRD: International Mixed Laboratories (LMI) and young teams associated with the IRD JEAI).

Research projects in line with IRD's scientific policy, in synergy with its researchers, will be supported. Interdisciplinary projects are welcome.

This call is part of the Atlas programme for short-term postdoctoral mobility launched by the FMSH and its partners.


Financial terms and conditions

A financial aid of 1 400€ per month (paid at the beginning of each month of stay) is attributed to the winners. It is intended to cover transportation and living expenses.

Eligibility criteria

Nationality/residence:
Be a citizen of a European Union country and reside in France

Degree/status:
Be a post-doctoral fellow in SHS and have defended his/her thesis from 2018. Be associated with a research unit in France.

Discipline:
Be engaged in research in the humanities and social sciences. Particular attention will be paid to projects that are in line with IRD's scientific strategy and that are in line with the major multidisciplinary challenges at the heart of the Institute's strategic issues:

  • Geo-resources and sustainability
  • Sustainable cities
  • Coastal and marine
  • One health
  • Biodiversity
  • Soil and Land
  • Sustainable Food Systems
  • Climate change
  • Migration

Proposals that are part of a sustainability science approach (transdisciplinarity, co-construction with stakeholders, participatory science) will be particularly welcome.

Applicants must be engaged in research in the humanities and social sciences. Original, interdisciplinary projects (including a crossing of SHS & non-SHS) and bearing a renewed approach to research in and with the South, will be particularly welcome.

Obligations of the laureates

The researcher will participate in the scientific life of the IRD unit in which he/she will be hosted. At the end of his/her stay, he/she must submit a report to the FMSH and the IRD presenting the activities carried out during his/her stay and their contribution to his/her research project. The report will be 30,000 characters long (not including spaces).

Application form

The application file is composed of a form and a scientific file. It must be submitted on the online platform. The complete applications must be uploaded on the online platform no later than March 18, 2024, 5:00 pm (Paris time).

The application form and the scientific file can be submitted in French or in English.

Content of the scientific file

  • The research project (10,000 characters long, not including spaces) which must include
  • The problematic and the objectives of the research project, contribution to the South
  • Methodology including how the project will be implemented with the South
  • A bibliography,
  • Details of the program (places and institutions to visit, contacts)
  • A CV of maximum 2 pages
  • A list of the five main publications and/or research achievements with scientific and/or societal impacts
  • A copy of the thesis diploma
  • A signed letter of motivation, stating the scientific and organizational reasons for the request for financial support
  • Letter of support from the LMI management or the JEAI coordinating team identifying the institutional partners in the field
  • A letter from the director of the laboratory/research center with which the applicant is associated in France

How to apply?

1. Go to the platform http://calls.msh-paris.fr and enter the "Researcher Workspace".

2. Log in if you have already created an account, if not, create an account.

3. Fill in your profile and click on "create a new application".

4. Select "Atlas outgoing 2024 program" then the specific call "FMSH-IRD: France > Southern countries".

5. Fill in all the tabs of the form.

6. In the "Documents" tab, upload a single electronic document in pdf format containing the following documents:

  • A research project
  • A CV of maximum 2 pages
  • A list of the five main publications and/or research achievements with scientific and/or societal/social impact
  • A copy of the thesis diploma
  • A signed letter of motivation, explaining the scientific and organizational reasons for the request for financial support and identifying the institutional partners in the field that are relevant to the proper conduct of the research
  • A letter from the director of the laboratory/research center with which the applicant is associated in France

7. You can save your application without submitting it and come back to it later, or you can submit it permanently. Once you have submitted your application, you will receive an automatic confirmation email. Please note that your application will not be considered if it is not submitted. Applications that are incomplete or do not match the description above will not be considered.

Selection criteria and process

A selection committee composed of members of the FMSH, the IRD, and external experts will analyze and select applications based on the following elements

  • The quality of the scientific file and the methodology developed
  • The relevance of staying in one of the countries where the IRD research unit is located with respect to the project developed and the researcher's background
  • The ability to identify scientific contacts on site

Preference will be given to researchers who have never benefited from the program.
