The competition between the United States and China, the relations between the two shores of the strait, and the 2024 presidential election

First conference by Hsin Hsien Wang on the topic: "The most dangerous place on Earth?"

In recent years, the increasing tension between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait has been a cause for concern among international observers. In 2021, the Economist magazine even described Taiwan as "the most dangerous place in the world."

With the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and the recent events in the Middle East, the issue of Taiwan remains as explosive as ever, especially in the context of increased competition between the United States and China. What is the current state of this relationship between the two sides of the strait and what is its likely evolution? What impact could the presidential election, which will take place in January 2024, have on this relationship?

As part of the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme and the seminars led by Professor Lun ZHANG on contemporary China for many years, we are organizing this conference by inviting a renowned specialist from Taiwan to attempt to provide answers to these questions: H Hsien Wang.

H Hsien Wang

H Hsien Wang is a professor and former director of the Institute of East Asian Studies and deputy director of the Institute of International Relations at National Chengchi University (NCCU) in Taiwan. These two institutes have a long history in studies on mainland China and cross-strait relations. They are considered as the best research centers in these subjects in Taiwan. Prof. Wang is one of the representatives of the new generation of specialists in these fields and also the editor-in-chief of the renowned journal Mainland China Studies. He also serves as an advisor on mainland China affairs for the Taiwanese government and local authorities.
