The Maison Suger is pleased to host the seminar 'Léon Wieger and the First Translation of the Zhuangzi into French,' organised by the research network 'The New French Sinology.'

The Jesuits are often described as the representatives of Confucianism in the
West, not least because of a series of publications produced in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, such as the Confucius Sinarum Philosophus (Paris 1687) and the Philosophia Sinica (Prague 1711). Later, after the restoration of the Society of Jesus (1814) and its return to China, the Jesuits' interest in Chinese culture extended beyond Confucianism.

The speaker

Yves Vendé is a lecturer at the Catholic University of Lille. In 2018, he defended a doctoral thesis in philosophy at Sun Yat-sen University in Canton, under the supervision of Chen Shaoming 陈少明, on Confucian hermeneutics of classical texts in dialogue with the thought of Gadamer and Ricoeur.
