The project
Title: Forum internum and obligations of conscience - the case of Thomas Hobbes
"We can interpret a significant part of Hobbes's political philosophy in the light of a debate to which secondary literature has paid little attention. I'm referring here to a debate that is both theological and political, concerning questions of conscience or dubious cases of conscience. In what follows, we will briefly retrace the history of this debate, and show how it provides a "key" to understanding many points that are difficult to grasp when interpreted outside this "thematic tradition". In the light of this reconstruction, we'll examine how Hobbes' theological and political thought, which are inseparable, are structured in reaction to this tradition. One of the central theoretical points from which we can clarify the debate on cases of conscience concerns the question of the obligation of erroneous conscience. Does one who follows a wrong order of conscience sin? Is conscience binding in all circumstances? In reality, the debates surrounding this question reveal a gradual shift from an objective conception of morality (characterized by the primacy of the objectivity of the law, particularly divine law, coming from outside) towards a subjective conception of morality (characterized by the primacy accorded to the individual, subjective instance of the law)."
