Julie Marquet

Julie Marquet is a specialist in colonial history. She wrote her thesis on the social uses of colonial law and justice in French settlements in India. In 2021, during the global movement to protest colonial monuments, she became interested in the long history of these monuments. She began working on their ‘biography’ as objects and on the dual symbolic and material dimensions of their circulation. She co-directs the Cast in Stone/Gravées dans le marbre project (2022-2024) and directs the Statues ‘rapatriées’ project (2024-2025).

Project

Title: Unraveling Monumental Power: The Aesthetics of Counter-Monuments and the Memories of Colonial Pasts

This project offers a collective and multidisciplinary reflection on counter-monuments installed in public spaces. It aims to explore additional monuments that engage with, complement, or physically contest monuments related to the history of colonization and slavery. Focusing on France, both in the overseas territories and in the mainland, the project provides an innovative study of these works, drawing on concepts from recent artistic research: "supportive works," "works-in-the-footnotes."

The approach builds on the expertise of a core team of researchers, artists, and educators in the fields of research, artistic creation, and analysis of socially pressing issues. The project will initiate an international and intercontinental dialogue with stakeholders from the academic, cultural, and artistic sectors, producing research that is both scientific and aesthetic. Additionally, it will design innovative tools for cultural mediation, particularly aimed at educational environments.
