Researcher in residence at the Maison Suger | August - December 2024
Jessica Corea is an environmental economist and Associate Professor (full) in the Department of Economics at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. His area of research is the optimal design of environmental policies, both theoretical and applied, with an emphasis on the modeling of environmental regulation. She will join Århus University in Roskilde, Denmark, as Professor of Environmental Economics in the Social Sciences and Environmental Geography Unit.
The project
Title: Understanding technological responses of industrial firms to climate policies
"In this project, we evaluate whether environmental public policy has promoted green patenting in Sweden. Compared to previous studies, our project incorporates a major innovation. We do not study the effect of a particular policy instrument (such as carbon taxes or the EU ETS) but develop a firmlevel policy stringency index to comprehensively assess the combined impact of the numerous policies in place. Indeed, since the 1990s many environmental policies have been implemented in Sweden targeting the emission of several local pollutants as well as the emissions of greenhouse gases. Sweden’s emissions have been also regulated by the EU’s policies. For instance, since 2005, the EU’s Emissions Trading System has set CO2 emissions reductions via cap-and-trade. The 2010 EU Directive on industrial emissions has imposed limits on emissions and requirements for the adoption of technology to reduce the release of pollutants, while the Energy Efficiency Directive has established legal obligations to improve energy efficiency. Complementary to emission regulations, Sweden's Tradable Green Certificates system, initiated in 2003, has incentivized the production of energy from renewable sources."
