Emmanuel Romero

Emmanuel Romero holds a degree in Political Science and earned a Ph.D. in Social Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) as well as a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Paris 8 University. He conducts research and teaches at several universities, including the UBA, where he is a member of the Gino Germani Research Institute (IIGG). His most recent research stay, devoted to the Jacques Rancière Archive, took place at the Institute for Contemporary Publishing Archives (IMEC). His work lies at the intersection of political theory, Latin American studies, and essay studies.

The project

Title: La barbarie chez Pierre-Simon Ballanche : le savant et son double. Une recherche franco-argentine sur les frontières du savoir au XIXᵉ siècle.

"This project seeks to investigate the presence of "barbarism" in the work of Pierre-Simon Ballanche (1776–1847), an unconventional philosopher whose ideas unexpectedly informed forms of working-class emancipation during the 1830s and 1840s. Part of a broader research agenda that is complemented by a parallel inquiry into the work of the Argentine writer Domingo F. Sarmiento (1811–1888), this study focuses on the shared persistence of a common problem: the existence of a country inhabited by supposed "barbarians" and its unexpected relation to knowledge. It examines how each of these two thinkers brought this problem to light within the same century—the century of the proletarian and his double, the century in which, according to Jacques Rancière, working-class identity was experienced through the mode of division—by exploring the forms in which a division analogous to that of the proletarian came to be conceived: that of a popular double of Enlightenment rationality, in which knowledge is reflected through the disturbance of its own exteriority. Against the conservative diagnosis of a struggle between civilization and barbarism, this project aims to examine these works at the point where they confront a different diagnosis: the destabilization of the boundary between the learned subject and its supposed negation."
