The project

Title: Subjective precariousness: mental health in sociological perspective in contemporaneity

"Relevant since the 1970s, the topic of mental health has taken on significant importance in the 2000s, especially in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic has had a considerable impact on the subjectivity of individuals, intensifying mental health problems and making the issue even more relevant both for academic and scientific research and for society in general. The aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between neoliberalism, subjectivity and mental health, considering the impact and sociological importance of the Covid-19 pandemic. To this end, we will analyse the intellectual production that directly or indirectly addresses the relationship between neoliberalism, subjectivity and mental health in the context of the pandemic, as well as studies that present the global psychiatric epidemiology in the pandemic and current period. We also aim to learn about and investigate collective experiences that can confront subjective precariousness, psychological exhaustion and the processes of individual pathologisation. In this way, we hope to offer sociological elements to understand and problematise the high incidence of mental suffering in post-pandemic times, as well as politicising mental health problems as a social and collective experience, unlike the explanations of hegemonic psychiatry and neoliberal culture, which tend to reduce the problem to the individual dimension. This post-doctoral research project is part of a broader research project on the relationship between neoliberalism (neoliberal culture) and subjectivity (subjective precariousness), the purpose of which is to find sociological elements for understanding and problematising mental health problems in contemporary times. Considering the biopsychosocial complexity of mental health, the research aims to make a sociological contribution to understanding the phenomenon."
